How can I Prepare to Go on Safari?
Why do you want to go on a safari?
This is not meant to question your judgment or your common sense. It is a realistic question that could help you enjoy your trip much more than if you had no idea why you were going. For example, if you are an experienced amateur photographer you will have an opportunity to capture some of the finest images you will ever see.
If you are the type of person who wants all the creature comforts while in the “wilds” of Africa, you can have those comforts. However, you will have to plan for a much different trip (and cost) than you would if you were going to spend a lot of time hiking and sleeping in tents.
So, when you want to learn how to prepare for a safari you should have a good idea of why you are going, where you are going and how you are going to travel.
Not You’re Standard Vacation
Taking a safari is much more than packing your bags for a holiday. You should talk with two or three experienced and reliable safari-tour providers before making a decision. Follow recommendations from customers (testimonials) and from people you know who have gone on a safari.
You should give some thought to taking as little as possible on your safari trip. This means not taking a lot of unnecessary items and not taking too much clothing. A good rule of thumb is to pack what you want to take along then take half of it out! Lightweight clothing and light-colored clothing are highly recommended. But don’t rely on short pants and short sleeves. Take long sleeves and full-length pants to protect you from the sun and insects.
Be sure to have more prescription medications than you will need, if possible. Don’t count on being able to obtain such items once your trip has started. Plan for plenty of clean, fresh drinking water and ask your tour operator if this will be supplied. Don’t rely on the local water.
If your safari plans include hunting big game with a weapon make sure you comply with all the laws for firearms use and for bringing home your “trophies.” You will probably find that most big-game animals are no longer hunted because they are now protected species.
When you plan to travel abroad, whether it is for safari or any other vacation, learn all you can about the country or countries you will be traveling to. Not only will you need to plan for your health and safety when you are “in the bush” you should plan for personal safety as you travel and when you arrive in foreign cities.
Basic necessities for a safari include a good pair of hiking boots and/or walking shoes, the correct clothing, plenty of water and a good tour operator. A final thought: over prepare but don’t over pack. Give yourself enough time before departure to put all the details in place. You’ll be glad you did.
