How Do I Fade Age Spots?

Most of us will develop “age spots” as we grow older. Many of us will simply accept the condition as one of the things that come with advanced age. But there are some things we can do to reduce the color of age spots and fade the color in relation to the rest of the skin.

Age spots are flat, brown areas, usually found on the face and hands. They can also occur on other parts of the body. They are not a threat to our health but many people consider them unsightly, which makes them a problem. Dermatologists advise us that these spots won’t go away by themselves. But there are treatment options that can help reduce the visibility of age spots.

Home remedies that seem to work include mixing a teaspoon of horseradish root (grated) with a ½ teaspoon of lemon juice, ½ teaspoon of vinegar and three drops of rosemary essential oil. According to instructions for use of this mixture the solution can be applied directly onto the age spots with a cotton ball or swab a couple of times each day. The mixture might irritate the skin a bit but the spots should be considerably lighter in time.

It is important to remember that these spots will not go away, even with the most effective treatment. The goal should be to lighten the color and make the spots less noticeable in relation to the rest of the skin. In order to achieve this, you might try the direct application of extra virgin olive oil. This can take away much of the dark color, in addition to helping moisturize the skin.

Several companies offer retail products for reducing age-spot coloration. These have been used by individuals with various results. Many of these products have hydroquinone as the active ingredient. You might also ask a pharmacist or dermatologist about new, natural solutions for getting rid of age spots.

If you don’t want to risk the money for a commercial product, try buttermilk and lemon oil. This mixture can be applied directly to the spots as well. You may have to repeat the process daily for a month or so before you see visible results.

Others have tried Castor oil for removing age spots. A few people have reported that rubbing organic Castor oil on age spots may even cause some of the spots to disappear. Aloe Vera gel is known to help some people remove or reduce age spots. This certainly won’t hurt, because it is a great treatment for the skin in general. If aloe Vera gel helps reduce or eliminate age spots, so much the better.

You may also be able to stop new age spots from developing by avoiding extended periods of time in the sun. Use sunscreen and make sure you get your required amount of vitamins. If you need to increase the selenium in your diet, try fresh, raw nuts that have this ingredient. When fading age spots, natural remedies may be best.
