How to Iron Silk?

Silk is one of the fabric types must be treated with particular care. In fact, if someone asks you to iron something made of silk you might be better off telling them you won’t do it and they shouldn’t do it either. Silk is very, very sensitive to heat, which means that pressing a hot surface against it is not a good idea. A light steaming will usually be enough to take out wrinkles, without the danger of shrinking the delicate fibers or burning them beyond use.

In addition, if you have silk items you should also be quite careful when exposing it to strong sunlight for long periods. Keep silk items dry and don’t expose them to chemicals of any kind. Spots and stains are nearly impossible to remove.

With these cautions in mind, make sure you avoid wrinkling the silk fabric, simply because silk is made from a protein fiber (cocoons made by the mulberry silkworm). Threads are very small and incredibly fragile. Use a specially made, small steamer that you can operate by hand. Some people have found that hanging silk items in the bathroom will help keep the fabric smooth and wrinkle free. Warm, moist air from the shower helps quite a bit.
