How to Remove Rust from a Car?

Make sure you know just what level of rust your car has before you settle on the “right” method to remove rust. For instance, if there is minor surface rust that needs to be removed before you show your car or sell it, you will follow a particular path for rust removal.

If the rust has replaced the paint in some sections but the body is still pretty much intact you will have to use different methods than you would for surface rust. If the rust has attacked the structure of the body (the metal components) you are in a completely different league.

Getting Ready

In one sense, removing rust from a car is like getting your house ready to paint. You should take as much time as necessary to prepare the surface before you apply primer and finish paint. Removing all traces of rust is a key element of this preparation process. You will need to get rid of the rust and make sure the surface is repaired and ready for paint.

Let’s assume you have traces of rust and some paint that needs attention. Your best bet may be to use an electric grinder that you can easily handle with you own two hands. Use sandpaper on a wheel to gradually get a smooth surface. Instructional materials often recommend 150 grit paper. This is “fine” sandpaper that is on the borderline of being medium. Make sure the area is as smooth as a painted area that doesn’t need attention.

You may need to actual grind heavier rust away. You may not be able to get rid of all rust by sanding. The metal-surface grinding wheel will take the rust away but you have to be careful not to remove too much paint or metal. If you feel you have the right touch, use this wheel to remove some of the pits and marks. Some people find that an acid compound designed to remove rust helps a lot. Make sure you follow the instructions to the letter when you use this substance.

Hand Sanding

Now it is time for hand sanding. (We said it would take time to prepare the surface.) In effect, you have already gotten rid of the rust. But the hand-sanding process will remove remaining traces of rust and rust “dust.” Take as much time as you need to so that the surfaces are completely smooth. Now you are ready to put on the primer and paint the surface.
