How to Sew Curtains?
Some individuals say they know how to sew but the truth is their knowledge is limited to simple tasks involving clothing repair or to putting on buttons (which is not that easy to do when it’s done correctly).
But what about sewing curtains for your home? Is there a right way and a wrong way? The simple answer is, “Yes” there is a wrong way. The correct way will give you just the right appearance for those highly visible windows.
The first step must be this: Measure your windows carefully. In fact, measure twice and cut once, the same as in carpentry!! A key tip: Allow double the horizontal measurement for the length of fabric. Another great tip: Add 8 inches to the vertical measurement you take. That will give you plenty of material to work with without the stress of coming up short.
Use pins to hold material in place as you work so you can readjust when necessary. Choose same-color thread for curtains so the seams won’t show. Then work on the seams very carefully so you won’t have wrinkles and buckled spots. This will be very important when it comes time to hang those new curtains.
Sides and bottom edges should be folded over one inch and then in a second one-inch section. The same folds will be used for the top when it comes time for that section. But you will fold the top another three inches and sew the hems in the middle of the folded section first. Sew one inch from the top to form your pocket.
