What is a Jock Itch? What are its Symptoms and its Treatment?

Some people may not be comfortable talking about this particular condition but jock itch, like other minor afflictions, should never be ignored. Even minor skin conditions can lead to more serious health conditions if not treated properly.

The name “Jock Itch” describes the condition very well. Someone who experiences the early symptoms will feel like scratching the groin area to relieve the annoying itch. While some minor, occasional itching is common with human beings who wear clothing, jock itch is something different. It can be a problem among athletes who actually wear jock straps.

Fungus Among Us

Jock itch is caused by a skin fungus that is known among those in the medical world as tinea cruris. These fungi resemble mold in structure and growth characteristics. Before you dismiss this as something that is not possible on a “clean” person, keep in mind that fungi and bacteria grow on all of us, no matter how clean we try to be.
Certain types of fungi thrive in warm, moist places on the body, such as in the groin area. They are particularly fond of the dead skin cells from the outer layer of our skin (epidermis). When we exercise and sweat, the conditions are just right for these “critters” to grow. If you don’t wash and dry the groin area thoroughly after exercise and on a regular basis, jock itch is certainly a possibility.

Prevention and Treatment

The fungal infection known by the common name jock itch begins in the groin area as a mild rash. If it spreads it usually moves along the inner part of the leg. If not treated properly the rash will be dark red in a matter of days and may even become bumpy as it grows. Affected areas may show scales of dead skin, though the color may change and the scales may slough off. This fungal infection generally does not spread to the penis or scrotum on men.

If you suspect jock itch infection, it may be best to see a doctor immediately. The doctor can study the area and view samples under a microscope to determine just what is causing the infection. You may want to try one of the commercially available creams or ointments developed for this condition, even before seeing a doctor. But it is important to use the correct product and to follow the instructions carefully. Hydrocortisone creams are particularly useful with this type of infection.

There are a few key steps you can take to prevent jock itch. In general terms these steps are health and hygiene habits that you should develop over time. For example, looser fitting clothes made of natural fibers or non-abrasive synthetic fibers should be the norm. These should also help carry moisture away from the groin area. It’s also important not to share personal items such as towels and wash cloths. Make sure the groin area is clean and dry before dressing. Use anti-fungal powder or spray to stop fungi before they spread.
