What to do when depressed?

Depression is a psychological phenomenon which can hit a person at any age or any situation. Depression occurs in a lot of people at varying degrees and can be treated clinically. Excessive and long term depression is accompanied with several psychological disorders. However depression can even occur when a person has undergone some traumatic experience or during some kind of a nervous breakdown. While the reasons for depression are many, it can to a certain extent be checked if a person is willing to follow some basic rules. One option is to get it medically treated through psychiatrist but not everyone might want to go in for something drastic.

When you are depressed all you want to do is lie down or sit about in the sofa and get very little work done. This kind of depression usually occurs when you have lost someone close to you or have very little motivation to do anything. In such cases you will want to indulge your body and do absolutely nothing. But that is exactly what you can’t do. You need to do something around the house, drag yourself out of bed, put on fresh clothes and make yourself busy. This is the surest, easiest way to make sure that you are fighting depression. Get about feeling fresh, put on new clothes, do something nice to your hair and then go out of the house and take a walk, or just run some errands or do some chores around the house. If you have a pet then take him for a walk or spend some time with him. If you have a garden do some gardening, dealing with plants and pets is one sure way of getting rid of depression.

The key to fighting depression is to make sure that your mind is always preoccupied and you always have important things to do. It doesn’t even need to be important. It is absolutely essential that you keep yourself surrounded with your friends and family. Tell them the reason for your depression and they will help you through it. No point hiding it from them because they are there to take care of you and hold your hand while you are dealing with depression. If you are going out to parties or fun night out then avoid alcohol consumption because that will just get you even more depressed.

A common thing most people tend to do when they are depressed is go in for binge eating sessions. You just want to take out a huge tub of ice cream and dig in or order fattening French fries and pizza and eat them all day long. But don’t binge eat because that will only make the situation worse. You will only end up blaming yourself for excessive calorie consumption and go into further depression. This is more applicable for people who are dealing with weight issues. Try to eat light and healthy, indulge yourself when you need to and workout or keep yourself busy all the time. Watch good movies, read good books and stay away from anything sad or tear inducing!
