What to do when you’re Bored?

It may seem strange to some people that, with so much to do, anyone would get bored. But this is a common occurrence, not only among children but with adults as well. There are some simple things that will relieve boredom, such as a walk around the neighborhood or a short drive through the park or to the lake. If these don’t take care of the “problem” it may be time to develop some new habits, such as reading or learning a new craft.

But what if the boredom is the result of waiting too long in the doctor’s office or waiting for a train or airplane? What if you have read until your mind is tired or there just isn’t anything to grab your attention? Some folks have come up with a list of silly but time-consuming activities that will help pass the time. They aren’t the kind of thing that will make your life better permanently but these little activities and tricks could add a few minutes of enjoyment when the day is just dragging along.

On long car trips, families have often played such games as trying to find a license plate from every state on the cars that pass. Other families play the “I’m think of something game” and give clues that help the other family members guess. If you are alone in the car, at home or in a waiting room, you’ll probably have to try something else, of course. How about begin a “fashion” critic for a few minutes. (Keep your thoughts to yourself!) But you can rate the clothing of people who pass by, giving them a rating on a scale of 1 to 5 or 1 to 10, for example. It’s fun and can be a harmless way to spend some “down” time.

Some people find they are able to tolerate the slow times by staring at someone (from behind) until they turn around. Be careful with this one or any other activity that might offend someone. This might work in a slightly different way – stare at an object for a long time, close your eyes and see what the “after-image” looks like. A parent once suggested that a child play the game of “try not to think of something.” What you’re trying not to think of will probably stick in your head. It’s fun!

There are some more constructive things to do with boredom too. If you can get three or four friends together, you can play a childhood game you haven’t thought of in years. How about marbles or checkers? What about making a list of the things you like about the other people with you at the time. Make a written list and share it with others. (You may not want to write a “don’t like” list!)

Make a dessert you haven’t eaten for years, such as jello with bananas or fruit. You might want to try some pudding, from scratch. This simple type of dessert can be great for sharing with friends and the making-and-eating will help you pass a couple of hours. When you’re bored, force yourself to be creative.
