What was the Norway Spiral?

Many people will go through their entire lives without hearing anything about the Norway Spiral. Most people are aware of the Earth’s Moon and most people know about Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). Many people know about the stars and the various constellations in their night sky. But it’s a safe bet only a few have even heard of the Norway Spiral.

One of the major reasons for this lack of knowledge is that the Norway Spiral was probably the result of some man-made activity, rather than being a new and exciting formation in the sky. This formation appeared over the Scandinavian country of Norway on December 9, 2009. There was excitement about the spiral because a few people thought it might be a sign of some sort (from beings on another planet).

Not So Much Excitement

As the excitement and fear died down, scientists and astronomers began to develop a theory about the Norway Spiral. It may well have been the failed launch of a Russian missile that simply lit up the night sky in a fascinating way. Russian officials did confirm a failed missile test occurred at this time, so this story has become the most widely accepted around the globe.

Writers and scientists have stated that the interesting spiral shape was probably caused by leaking fuel from the missile. Apparently the craft was out of control and came back to Earth in a spiral descent. The explosion provided the bright light. The weight and design of the craft provided the curious shape.

Photos taken of the event show a distinct circular pattern and the first evidence of the Sun coming up over the horizon. Scientists believe the light from the Sun helped illuminate the leaking fuel.
Apparently this wasn’t the first time that people in the area witnessed something like the Norway Spiral. A month earlier, another missile launch created a curious light pattern. This time the missile was launched from a submarine well away from land.

Spiral Shape

Some people have proposed that the sighting was some sort of new aurora, similar to the Northern Lights. Other theories have included magnetic phenomenon or a falling space module. Astronomers don’t believe an aurora would take this shape. A few people thought this might have been a massive light-projection experiment from somewhere on Earth. But this is discredited as humanly impossible.
Studies of failed rocket launches do show that rockets tumble back to Earth by spewing fuel in at least two directions, so this is the most likely explanation. News reports in the past few months continue to mention unidentified flying objects (UFOs) as the source of the Norway Spiral. But nearly all the astronomers and missile experts questioned state that there is nothing mysterious or frightening about the formation, other than the danger from falling rocket debris.

Most scientists were interested in the shape and color of the formation, even noting that it was certainly beautiful against the night sky. But they stand behind their beliefs that the Norway Spiral was created by men and women on Earth.
